My self-published novel, TOO NEAR THE EDGE has gotten good reviews from online reviewers and won a silver medal for best regional fiction in the 2007 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY) contest. It's available on Amazon and other online sites, and I can keep it in print as long as I want. If I want it to sell, I have to promote it, which is harder than it should be due to the bias against self-publishers.

I tried to get in under award thing. My book isn't shortlisted for the mystery awards they list, but I wrote them a very polite email asking if the IPPY would qualify me to be an author at their conference. They replied that I don't meet the eligibility requirements and that awards like the IPPY are not on the list, "since they are primarily awarded to authors from non-traditional publishing houses.".

I have lost count of the number of people who say "I want to write a novel" and think that they will just sit down, put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, and the whole thing will just unfold before them. I've read a few novels, they think, why can't I write one?

The key to writing any story well, is to find the story that only you can write. This story carries your own emotional truth, and as you progress through the story writing process, your character will take you on the journey of emotional growth just as they will your readers once it's published.

The process of writing any story is exactly that, a process. And whether you are tackling a novel, a short story, an essay or a non-fiction book, you need to begin by planning your story.

This is the most ignored stage in the writing process, and yet it is by far the most important. JK Rowling spent five years planning the Harry Potter novels. And that certainly paid off, didn't it?

The Deeper Character Journey

The deeper character journey is the most important aspect of any story. It is what your readers will remember and it is what makes the process of writing a story so worthwhile for the writer. Every time you take your character on a journey, you go on that journey yourself.

How do we find that deeper character journey? Where do we begin?

We begin with this simple exercise:

Without thinking too much about it, finish this sentence:

Every character has a weakness-- something they need to learn to have a better life. Your character's weakness should now be pretty clear to you, as it is strongly connected to what they need to learn the importance of from the above exercise. With your character's weakness in place, you can now begin to put them and their weakness under pressure and suddenly your story is off and running.

When you have finished you will find that you have written a lot of different values into your answer. Take a few moments to divide these values into their negative and positive groups.

- I am interested in writing a story where the main character discovers the importance of ... ... ... ... Write for 5 minutes, preferably in long hand, allowing whatever comes up to just flow onto the page.

- I am interested in writing a story about a character who goes from being ... to being ... What is your character's weakness?

Once you have done this you can now write your deeper character journey in one simple sentence.

Each hour you sit at your computer causes another part of the body to break down, atrophy, cells to die, muscles to sag. When it doesn't move it rusts inside, and rust (oxidation) causes health problems.

Dancing-- I like dancing because it causes social and physical healing. It moves every part of your body.

Most writers have dangerous issues they pay little or no attention to until it's too late-- their health! And yet, health can be more of a problem than Writer's Block, complications of concentration, writing anxiety, daily output frustration and editor angst. What I'm talking about is sitting related diseases.

Move from your computer every hour. Do something physical. Vaccum, cook, exercise.

It took me five years to write my novel, The Mayor's Wife Wore Sapphires, and all during that time, I had to work at keeping healthy. I knew I needed a routine of loving me to ever finish this novel. I share how I had to love me enough to be energetic and in good health when my novel was finished.

Now that we've identified the possible disasters, let's talk about how to keep the five-hours-a-day work at your computer from rushing you away from this earth, or debilitating you. Yoga is the only exercise that systematically exercises all of the internal organs of your body-- liver, spleen, heart, pancreas, thalamus, and intestines. All three of the above are free, and you know writers often need FREE.

Drink eight glasses of water per day as an antioxidant ... to wash all the poisons from your system-- stale indoor air, that fatty snack you took when you left your computer. Oh, by the way, just stock the fridge with green stuff, carrot and celery sticks. When you don't have any bad stuff to eat you won't eat it.

Eat lots of green stuff-- spinach, greens, cabbage, okra, peas

When you go on Good Morning America for the entire world to see, this is your best bet for being alert and looking healthy and strong. Now if you decide you don't want to choose this lifestyle, or some other daily exercise program, then don't blame your nurse when she sticks you with a needle or your doctor demands that you have a stay in the hospital. It's all left up to you.

By the way, I did finish my novel with aplomb, got 5-Star Reviews, and I'm working my way toward the Oprah Show!
